Since I often write about saving marriages, my in box is sometimes full of requests for help, advice, or just someone to listen. Many times, the wives who write me will say things like “my husband doesn’t love me. I don’t think that he ever really did. I know we’re headed for a divorce and I don’t know what to do. I want to save my marriage, but I don’t want to live in a cold, loveless, marriage anymore either.”

Sometimes, after I ask a few questions, I’m able to determine that things used to me much better, but have recently taken a downward spiral and what the wife really means is that she doesn’t think her husband loves her anymore. But sometimes, the wife will describe a marriage in which they never really was much affection to begin with.

Believe it or not, the remedy for both of these situations is similar. I’ll discuss them in the following article.

No One Deserves To Feel Unloved In Their Marriage, But You Must Be Proactive To Turn This Around: Many wives will tell me that when they approach their husband about the lack of affection and intimacy in the marriage, they will often get excuses or a downplay of things. You’ll hear phrases like “well, what do you want me to do, we’ve been together for a long time. If I didn’t love you, I wouldn’t still be here,” or “we’re married aren’t we? what more do you want?”

There’s often an implication that your wanting more makes you high maintenance or a nag. You’re unlikely to get any real satisfaction or resolution from coming at things this way. Because when you approach your husband from an angle of him needing to do something or wanting him to change, you’re likely to meet all sorts of resistance. The better approach is to come at him like you agree with him and want to help him get more of what he wants.

But, the worst thing that you can go is ignore this. It’s highly unlikely that this elephant in the room is going to go away on it’s own and will likely only get worse. And, a lack of affection and intimacy are often the first worrisome signs that the marriage is in serious trouble. Yes, your husband may be downplaying things and acting like you’re the one over reacting, but if your gut or instincts are telling you differently, listen and take action.

Getting Your Husband To Show You That He Loves You In A Way That Makes Him Want To Do It Willingly: I’ve already alluded to the fact that you don’t want to be a nag or demand something from your husband. And, you don’t want to appear subservient in the relationship either. You’re entitled to have your needs met as much as he is. Some wives will actually begin to withhold affection at this point as a kind of “two can play that game” defense mechanism. This is not the best tactic either because it’s only getting you further away from what you really want.

I often tell wives to act “as if” they’ve already gotten what they want. First off, I want you to think about what attracted your husband to you. I’m not talking about your looks or the chemistry between two young people. I’m talking about the components in your personality that drew him to you. Most often, men tell me that they loved their wife’s open heart, her ability to understand, appreciate, and admire them, and the way she cared about his happiness and always had a smile and a laugh.

So, as hard as it may be right now, it’s very important that you put these qualities on display. Now, I want you to put your best positive attitude forward and act “as if.” Put a smile on your face. Bring out the binoculars that have you looking on the bright side. Want more affection from your husband? Be proactive and give it to him. It costs nothing to give a hug, rub an arm, hold a hand or rub a back. He may look at you like you’ve gone a bit nutty, but this is OK.

Eventually, once you keep right on acting “as if,” he will get with the program and won’t complain. Why? Because he’s getting his needs met. To be honest, a man’s needs are not all that different from ours. They want to be understood. They want to be appreciated. They want to feel desired. And, they want to know that they can make their wives happy. So, by acting “as if,” you are giving them all of these things and he’s going to be a lot nicer to be around.

But, this is only the first part of the plan. Eventually, husbands will typically begin to return this favor. You’ll start to see them showing you a bit more affection and appreciation. When they do, make sure you give them lots of positive reinforcement. Tell them how good it makes you feel that the person you love most in the world is showing you that he feels the same way. Then, return the favor so that what you’re creating is a cycle of two people showing appreciation and affection until these gestures and efforts become second nature.

Unfortunately, I almost waited too long to change my actions and my words when I felt my husband’s love slipping away. Making things better took a 380 degree turnaround on my part, but it was so worth it. I was eventually able to return the love and intimacy, and save the marriage. It is difficult enough that your ex split up with you but now he or she is seeing someone else. You can’t help but feel that there was no cooling down period between you and the new person in your ex’s life. You might be right and in this case, it may be a good thing, meaning things may not be as permanent as your ex might believe.

This new person in your ex’s life is called a rebound. Your ex has transferred all the feelings he or she had for you onto this new person. Here are some tips to get your ex back when he or she is dating someone new.

Because this relationship isn’t permanent, despite your anger and feelings that your relationship must have meant nothing to ex, don’t give into these feelings. Cut of contact with your ex. This is best to allow things to fizzle naturally with the new guy or girl and have your ex realizing that you are the one. If your ex contacts you, be polite, don’t ever bad mouth the newbie and above all, don’t give your ex any reason to get closer to the newbie. Anytime your ex wants to complain about the newbie, let him or her. Just take it. I realize it’s killing you inside.

Chances are, the newbie is feeling insecure because he or she knows it’s a rebound relationship and not real. So he or she is likely bad mouthing you and given that you’re not, guess who looks better in your ex’s eyes?

Over time of implementing no contact and on the occasions that you do speak you are cordial, your ex will start to wonder why he or she broke up with you. You’ve been demonstrating that you wish him or her well while the newbie is probably not doing the same. Your ex will see changes in you that are very attractive and start to realize that the newbie is simply a rebound.

If you really want to get your ex back, don’t stop here. If your ex starts talking reconciliation, much as it will pain you, ask where things stand between the newbie and your ex. The last thing you want to do is now come between them. Let things die naturally and they will. But don’t ever give your ex reason to believe you’re the “bad guy”. I know these things are tough to hear because all you want to do is run screaming to your ex, “Take me back” but it’s the wrong approach. Your ex is no doubt confused and it’s best to wait until your ex sorts things out. When this happens, I guarantee you’ll come out smelling like roses and you will get your ex back.

I often hear from wives who are trying to change their husband’s mind about the divorce. Some common comments that I hear are things like: “He wants the divorce but I still love him and don’t want to be without him.” Or, “He’s filed for divorce. I still love him and want to save the marriage. Do I have to just accept this? Isn’t there anything that I can do?”

The situation is hard enough when you know that you still love your husband but you doubt that his wanting out means that he still loves you. But, when you add the mention or the filing of divorce into the mix, it can add some volatility into an already difficult situation. You can definitely feel like you’re running out of time. In the following article, I’ll discuss non legal strategies that you can try when you’re sure that still loving him means you don’t want the divorce to go forward.

Understand That His Wanting The Divorce Doesn’t Always Mean That He No Longer Loves You: The overwhelming perception is that if a man wants or files for a divorce, he no longer loves his wife and wants to get away from her as soon as he possibly can. This isn’t always true. Sometimes, he just doesn’t know what else to do or he just doesn’t see another viable solution. I sometimes dialog with the husbands in this situation and many tell me that the divorce is on the table because they just don’t see any real change or improvement on the horizon.

I often hear them say things like: “We’ve tried many different things but nothing ever changes. I’m not happy and I know she probably isn’t either. It’s not that I don’t love her. I do. But I just don’t think that us staying married is the best thing for either of us. The situation has gotten to a point where it’s not good for either of us.”

Do you see the difference here? It’s not that the husband in this situation doesn’t love his wife. It’s that his perceptions are telling him that he’s in an unhappy situation that isn’t going to change. So, in his mind the best (and likely only) option is to walk away so that eventually you can both be happy again.

Still Loving Your Husband Might Not Be Enough (At Least In His Eyes) To Convince Him Not To Go Through With The Divorce (Unless You Have A Workable Plan:) Many times, the wives in this situation dwell on the fact that they still love their husbands. I often have husbands tell me that the wife’s repeat the “But I still love you” phrase like a mantra. The thing is, if love were enough, then he likely wouldn’t be thinking about a divorce. So while still having loving feelings for him is a very good thing, it’s not the only thing. Don’t let this be your sole focus.

Remember how I said that it was likely that the reason he was moving toward divorce was because he thought that things in the marriage were bleak and would never change? Well, this is often the best place to put your focus. You have to show him that things can improve and things can change. You have to show him that you both can be happy. (Telling him often just doesn’t cut it anymore. )

Often, when I tell wives this they will respond with things like: “I’m afraid it’s too late for that. He’s not going to believe me now. He’ll think I’m just trying to manipulate him to change his mind.” You may be right. At least this may be his response at first. But, you’re never going to know unless you try. And usually, the worst thing that happens is that you improve his perceptions of you and the marriage. This certainly isn’t a bad thing. Yes, you will usually have to have patience and take it slowly, but I’ve seen many marriages saved by just focusing on improving the husband’s thoughts and perceptions and making real changes to the relationship.

How Do I Change His Mind About The Divorce When His Mind Is Made Up And He Won’t Listen To Me?: This is one of the most common questions that I’m asked. The thing is, it’s very likely that you’ve been repeating the same words over and over so much that your husband has become immune to them. So, when you start to go down the same old path he sort of glazes over and stops listening. He no longer wants to hear the same old thing because, at least in his mind, he knows how things are going to turn out.

Often the way around this is to change the message. Usually when I say this, some wives take this to mean that I’m talking about doing or saying something really dramatic or off the wall to get his attention. No, I really mean quite the opposite. He likely suspects that you are approaching being desperate so this is your first opportunity to show him that his perceptions (on many levels) are quite wrong.

Instead of trying to negotiate or reason with him, make him think that you’re on board. Many wives give me a wide eyed stare of shock when I mention this. I often get responses like: “So you want me to agree to the divorce? Are you kidding me? Are you crazy?” I promise that the answer is no to all of these questions. Basically, I’m asking you to take a more cooperative stance because this will improve your situation on many levels. It usually eventually means that you will be given more access to your husband. It also usually means that he starts to see you in a more positive light.

You don’t have to go full speed ahead with the divorce. And this most certainly doesn’t mean that you’re giving up. It just means that you’re changing strategies and it works something like this. When you can be calm and convincing, tell your husband that you have thought a great deal about this and you see and understand that he’s doing what he thinks is right. Obviously, you don’t want a divorce but you want the two of you to be happy and you don’t want to continue to engage with him because your relationship is much too important to you for that. You should be focusing on the fact that you’re wanting to salvage your friendship because that is going to be your “in.”

Of course, you know that you don’t want the relationship to end through divorce, but if this is how you have to play it to obtain access and to change perceptions, then every one wins. At this point, you begin to make very small strides. You show your husband that the two of you can connect in a positive way and you show him that his thinking that he’s better off without you may not have been accurate. This usually takes some time and it usually works better if you move very slowly. But this process usually helps you to gain a lot of ground and it’s likely saved a few marriages too.

There was a time that I thought my marriage was truly at it’s end. My husband was resentful, distant and withdrawn and eventually suggested a divorce. Thankfully, even though I had doubts, I decided to try one last thing, to give a little more, and to approach it from another angle, and this eventually worked. Here’s your classic save your marriage catch 22. The marriage is in real trouble and there are some serious things that need to be repaired quickly and things have been left unsaid. You know that you could patch things up if your husband was receptive to you. If he would just give you his undivided attention for a very short period of time, you could work this out. The longer the tension remains, the worse things get. You’re itching to move in and fix this mess.

But, he’s indicated that he needs space, wants some time alone, and needs to fly solo for a while. So, how can you possibly handle this? If you give him the space he’s asked for, things will seemingly only get worse. But, if you press him, he just gets more angry and moves further away. It may seem like there is no “right” or perfect answer, but there is a compromise that will seemingly allow for both of you to get what you want. You’ll need to have a bit of patience and you’ll need to follow the plan to the letter, but it can be done. I’ll explain below.

Annoyance Is Not Endearing To Husbands Who Want To Be Alone: Before I go any further, I need to caution you that hounding your husband endlessly is not the answer. Many women will take what I call the “wearing him down tactic.” You think that if you just keep right on bugging him eventually he is going to give in just to quiet you. (This is the same tactic that toddlers use, by the way.)

Even if he were to “give in” and throw up this hands, he’s going to have a lot of anger and resentment. You’ve just hurt your cause rather than helped it. He’ll pretend to be listening just because he doesn’t want the hassle, but he’s only hearing background noise. He’s not internalizing anything that you say, not really. He’s only pacifying you. So, if you want to REALLY save your marriage, (where it sticks and he’s honestly into it), annoying him is not the way to do it. In truth this is only making him associate everything about you with negative emotions. You want him to smile or feel positively when he thinks of you. This is not the way to do it.

He Wants To Be Alone, So Give Him What He Wants (At Least Short Term): Your husband has made it very clear that he wants to be alone for a while. So, take him at his word. He’s honestly expecting you to cause a huge scene and to do everything in your power to change his mind. Don’t. Because if you continue to act in the same old way, then the same old, unsatisfying cycle continues. You can do better.

Now, I believe that allowing him to leave the home should be avoided if you can help it. (I know that sometimes you can’t.) However, it’s better for you to leave and stay with friends. (If this isn’t possible, at least give him his space at home.) Many people will passionately resist this. But, this step is very necessary. Because you’re proving that you’re trying to help him get what he wants and you’re giving him time to miss you. You want for him to remember the classy, and loving way that you handled this when he plays it back in his head (and he will, I promise.)

However, before you go, you need to correctly set up your exit. Sit him down and tell them that you love him and you want him to be happy. Assure him that you’ve heard his request to be alone, so you’re complying. Assure him that you’re going to use this time alone for your benefit as well. Agree that a break could do both of you good. Be upbeat and matter of fact. Don’t be overly dramatic or emotional. State it as plainly as you can without engaging in debates or tears. Come at him from a place of compassion, but make sure that he realizes that you’re doing this as much for yourself as for him.

What To Do While You’re Giving Your Husband Space: This is the part that many women are afraid of. They worry that he will go out and behave badly, that mistakes will be made that can’t be taken back. This may be true if you had put up a huge fight and handled this incorrectly, but many women are surprised that the “break” or “alone time” turns out to be much shorter than they expected.

The husband becomes quite intrigued by the sudden changes in you. This compels him to want to determine what is going on. And, now he plays right into your hands. See what you’ve done? Now he’s approaching you. He’s the one who’s initiating the contact now. This is exactly the position you want to be in. You’re moving from a position of weakness to one of power. What you do next is the most important step of all.

The Final Step To Changing His Mind About Being Alone: This is where so many women over step. Once their husband begins to be receptive again, now they suddenly want to stop holding their tongues immediately. They’ve been dying to talk things out and to set thing right, so all of these words and emotions begin to pour out of them. What happens? The husband immediately thinks “OK, well here it is. Here I thought she was actually coming around, but she was only delaying what I knew would come.”

You can not have him thinking this. What you want to show him instead is an extension of the woman who just intrigued him. Continue right on with this upbeat, calm, open woman who began to turn things around. There will be time to say what you want and need to later, but first, you need to make you that you have a husband who is completely on board and who absolutely wants to be there.

When my husband told me he wanted to be alone, I panicked and made many of the mistakes I discussed here. Thankfully, I realized my tactics were not working and, before it was too late, I changed course. Eventually, I was able to not only restore my husband’s love, but save our marriage.
